If you type 1,000 words in a post, very few people will take the time to expand that post to read your poignant thoughts that could change their outlook for the day, and maybe even their entire life. Ok, so not all posts are life-changing, but you still want your posts read, right? Or why else would you be posting?
People who browse online social media sites like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and more, will scroll for miles before finally clicking on something that catches their eye. Statistics show that some of the most eye-catching posts that regularly creates engagement (gets clicked on, shared, or commented on) include compelling images that contain relevant information in the form of a quote, statistic, infographic or attention-grabbing headline.
With such great cameras on almost every mobile device, it is simple to capture images you can use for the purpose of posting. Or, if you prefer, there are many sites and programs online you can use to grab royalty-free images (like Unsplash.com and Pixabay.com which you can download from without a fee, and istockphoto.com which allows you to download images for a fee).
You must never copy random images you find on the web as many images are copyrighted. Using a copyrighted image could end up costing you big bucks and at the very worst, a law suit. Also, never, ever use an image with any type of watermark over it. That typically means it is a protected image and you have to purchase it, along with possible licensing rights to use it. Using images with watermarks is not professional and can lower your credibility considerably.
Peruse your favorite image sites and find one that conveys the message of your article. Then pick the best, attention-grabbing quote from your content that you can find, and add it to your image so that it will catch someone’s eye. A quick Google search will give you a list of options for applications/programs you can download onto your mobile device, or use on your larger devices via the cloud, to edit and add text to your images.
Once complete, post the image, and if applicable, link it to your related content (your blog, your website, your sales page, your opt-in page, etc.). Then let the clicking, liking, sharing, retweeting, and commenting begin!
To emphasize the point that images are important and the most engaging element you can use online, here are some statistics from a few surveys taken by Hubspot.com, a company known as one of the premier online marketing specialists:
- When people hear information, they’re likely to remember only 10% of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, people retained 65% of the information three days later.
- Facebook posts with images see 2.3X more engagement than those without images.
- Using the word “video” in an email subject line boosts open rates by 19% and click-through rates by 65%.
- 37% of marketers said visual marketing was the most important form of content for their business, second only to blogging (38%)
It is important to note that although compelling images are very important, you still have to back it up with great, engaging content. If the links you connect to your images are not engaging, you will get less and less engagement.
